Now. Is this life or not? I be so calm. If she come, I be happy. If she don’t, I be content. And then I figure this the lesson I was suppose to learn.

About This Quote

A man who was fighting in the American Civil War wrote this poem about his love for his wife. He was fighting for the north, which at that time had a reputation of being hated by the south. He was worried about dying in battle and never seeing his wife again. He wanted to keep living, but he didn’t want to die either.

He wanted to be happy but he also wanted to live. He figured that if she came, he would be happy, but if she didn’t come, he would be content with his life. This shows how complicated life is even for those who are very close to each other.

Love can cause great happiness and great sadness at the same time.
